Responsibility in FilmmakingWe as filmmakers shape what people value. Audiences emulate what they see on-screen. Whether it is the "wholesome" values of the '30s, '40s... the angry "Anti-Heroes" of the '70s... "gangland stereotypes" or "apathy and entitlement-based derision of that-which-was-at-one-time-emotional," it is mediathat has spread those visions of "what-it-is-to-be-'cool'" to every corner of America, and far into the rest of the world as well. The state of the world is due in large part to that which has been popularized in film, TV, news, games and other media. If we are unhappy with the way things are in the world, it is the responsibility of filmmakers to make films that paint a picture of the world we wish to live-into. If we are unhappy with the way things are in the world, it is the responsibility of those with the ability to fund films, to fund films that paint a picture of the world we wish to live-into. If we are unhappy with the way things are in the world, it is the responsibility of the public wishing for a better world to vote with their money to perpetuate and show the commercial viability of films that paint a picture of the world we wish to live-into. |
